Jamie Lee

I grew up in these north woods playing, gathering stones and swimming in the many lakes. About ten years ago my husband and I had a chance to move back here from the Black Hills, and we made the move. Together we built a sustainable straw bale house and studio on 20 acres where we work, garden, play, and enjoy these golden years.

Most of my life has been spent crafting stories both for my books and on public radio. I’ve published nine books, both fiction and nonfiction, and have written over 90 documentaries for public radio with my producer/husband partner, Milt Lee. One of the projects was a 52-part Native Music series that took us over 110,000 miles into Indian Country. It was quite the adventure and took us 4 years to produce. That series is still available for download at our website, oyate.com

As you can see, I’ve spent many years practicing my writing craft but have only recently given myself permission to play with my inner artist in this pebble art. I love discovering how to create story and dimension in this minimalist way. It also isn’t too shabby to have a reason to spend a lot of time on the beaches of our beautiful 10,000 lakes. It has become a sweet obsession. I hope you enjoy both my art and my books.

It is such a pleasure to be a part of Gallery North in Bemidji. It is really my first experience displaying my work in this kind of environment. As happy as I am to see my shelves full of books and pebble art, it is also great fun to have all these new friends who are part of this cooperative, dynamic effort.
